Usually, medical transcription rates are charged on a per line basis. This would be known as a base rate.  Then, their possibly might be other charges added to this base rate, such as additional charges for various customized options. But some pretty common guidelines for figuring medical transcription rates usually include a 65 character base, per line.  Also, sometimes, as a convenience or preference to certain transcription companies and/or their clients, they may charge per actual character, or some even can charge on a per page basis.  And finally, most of the more reputable firms have automated equipment that counts characters and words at a very accurate rate.
