Can you use a medical bill for a tax write off if you don’t have the bill paid off?

I have a medical bill from last year that is around $1,500.00 dollars, I did not have medical insurance at the time (unemployed) so I have to pay the whole bill out of pocket. I’m doing my taxes now and wondered if I can use that bill as a write off under the Unreimbursed Medical Expenses section. The thing is I don’t have the bill paid off and I’m just making payments on it.

ummm no…it has to be what was actually paid out of your pocket..if it’s not paid yet then NO….come on now.

    2. Judy1 Says:

You can only deduct the amount you have actually paid, for the year when you paid it. Even then there are many restrictions on deducting medical bills.

No. You can only deduct expenses actually paid in 2008.
