Cannot leave the hospital unless settle the full medical bill?

vincent T asked:

I have a friend living in Philipines told me that her brother was admitted to the hospital for an minor operation, the total costs is 25,000 peso.

She had paid 15,000 and cannot pay the balance 10,000 peso due to financial difficulty.

After the operation, the hospital do not allow her brother to discharge unless she pay the balance medical bill….

Is this the policy of the hospital in Philipines? Or is she telling me lies?

This is the policy in Mexico, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was the policy in other Third World countries like the Philippines.

I don’t know, but it really doesn’t make any sense at all. With hi staying, he is costing them money. Most hospitals will kick you out if you can’t pay! Maybe google it. Hopefully this friend is someone you know in real life, because I knew of someone who had a ‘friend’ in the Philippines (met online) and they Always scammed him out of money with sad stories. He got wise to it eventually.
