It could make it tough for a start-up business, but certain types of professions are almost recession-proof.

People WILL continue to get married and they will continue to want wedding photos. They may not have as money to pay, but they will still hire someone for the job. There may be a drop in other types of portraiture, though.

I imagine that there will be some work for real estate photography as people will be selling off their properties.

I imagine that commercial work will continue as companies will still have to advertise. Wise companies will advertise even more.

If you get into fine art, there is a certain market segment that is so insulated from the economy that they won't stop spending at all. In fact, some will watch prices stabilize and even fall and decide that it's a good time to move in on investment properties, including fine art.

As if things weren't bad enough for photographers.... In a recession, sure, not as many people will be worrying about having their pictures taken. But there will still be a small need. Once the economy comes out of the recession, the demand will go back to where it was.

However, in a depression, such as the Great Depression, there will not be a need for photographers, and many many other jobs that are not necessities.

Photography at least offers the ability to 'change hats' and go into a different field.

Art photography will probably be hit by a downturn in the economy as Art is bought from peoples surplus money, if they haven't got it they don't buy.

There will always be work for a good photographer, even if it's just doing studio shots for catalogue work.

Some say that a recession is the best time to start a new venture, tax concessions get better, start up grants become available from worried governments. etc..

I'm glad you want to be a photographer - I think (along with many other people here) that you'd make a terrific pro.

If the economy goes off a cliff we photographers will obviously go with it - but certain key areas flourish in a recession. I'd google the 'stages of the economic cycle', you'll find early expansion, mid expansion, late expansion, early contraction and late contraction... the contraction areas are what will apply in a recession.

Industries that typically do well in a downturn include security companies, commodities (gold mining and refining for example), official receivers and others...

To answer your final question - most photographers go out of business within a couple of years in any case, due to bad photography or at least as often, bad business skills. In a recession many marginal photographers will go out of business, lose their homes etc. Most photographers earn very little from their profession, so many don't have any kind of financial cushion - it means they are very vulnerable and liable to go out of business.

If you can find any articles from the President Carter era, you will get some sense of what it may be like, but we don't have the double digit inflation of the time.

This usually drives the photographers who are not more than bi-pedal copy machines out of the business as the impact of photos becomes more important to those who use photography to sell their products.

Unfortunately many good photographers will move into other forms of employment, but hopefully keep their hands (eyes?) in to photo biz part time.

Economies go through cycles, some up some down. Did Billery Gates let talk of the economy stop his dreams? Does Anne Geddes worry about the stock market?

Downswings effect everyone, some still get rich, some change careers or jobs, some lose jobs blah blah blah.

Unless everyone goes out of business there will still be demand for skilled professionals.
