Is it worth going to Goldman Sachs with a resume to meet people in person, or should I keep everything online?

Handsome Devil asked:

I live in Boston walking distance to Goldman Sachs. My background is scientific (biotech). I thrive at data analysis and long tedious projects. Member of patent bar. I recently met someone who said they would take someone like me since I’m very bright, in my prime, and willing to work very long hours. I have been to the website. There is an option to apply online, but I was wondering if it is to my advantage to first show in person. I’m not sure if being chiselled out of stone and 6′5″ would make them remember me when they saw my online application (I would likely have to do thereafter). Any thoughts on what would work best to my advantage?

absolutely go in person if you can. I’m sure GS receives thousands of resumes per day. How many faces do they see, people do they meet? It’s a game of numbers.

If you go in person without an appointment, you will only talk to the receptionist.

Unfortunately going in person will not accomplish much since they’ll probably just tell you to go home and apply online anyway. If you have the skills and think you’re qualified, apply online and I’m sure you’ll at least get an interview. Once you you land a face-to-face meeting, that’s where you separate yourself from other candidates.

You might be wasting your time going in person, they might just say submit your resume on line.
But it just might happen that they let you fill out an app, and maybe talk to somebody who might be impressed by you taking some initiative.
it is worth the trouble?? You decide.

It doesn’t matter. Unless your Daddy works there or you go to any Ivy league school, you won’t get the job now. Wait until the fall when the chaos from recent college grads have a chance to settle down, then go in person to the HR dept.
