Should I stay at Goldman Sachs or go back to Civil Engineering?

Jenny Shea asked:

Hello, I have about 5 days to decide whether to leave my prestigious Wall Street job at Goldman Sachs for an Engineering position. My degree is in Civil Engineering but everyone knows how those jobs pay. However, I enjoyed engineering in college but got caught up in the idea of working on wall street. Should I stay miserable at GS and take the chance of getting a huge bonus, or call it quits on Wall Street? Would love to hear everyone’s feedback.

There are no jobs in Civil Engineering. They didn’t get a multi-billion dollar bailout like Goldman Sachs has.

Just in case you haven’t heard, there have been massive layoffs in the civil engineering field due to the recession and the future doesn’t look bright for the civil engineering field. Most of the civil engineers that have been laid off will probably not return to the field since it is expected that the economy will have a jobless or flat recovery.

I’m looking at the job pipeline at my job and at my friends’ jobs and I see not much work and a ton of competition for those few jobs.
