Threatening to send my medical bill to collection?

Posted by admin
Ok Electronics asked:

A doctors office is threatening to send my medical bill to collection because I cannot afford to make the minimum payment their office wants. They say its their policy and wont budge. I was under the impression that as long as your making payments on time there would not be a problem. Is there any truth to that? I am making payments just not what they want. I am sending them what I can afford now and as things improve send more and pay it off. Are there any state laws regulating medical bill collections? I live in the state of maryland.

Thanks!

even tho you are paying on the bill it is not the terms they have set and yes, they can turn it over to the collection agency

It is just a threat to get you to pay more if you have it,,Even if they send it to a collection agency it won’t affect your credit..Pay as much as you can regularly and there is nothing more they can do..If they ever return a check to you then that can be taken as a sign that your payment is paid in full..My Motherinlaw took a Hospital to court over that and won..When they call again tell them the conversation is being recorded and that you can only pay what you have been paying and if they continue to harass you , you will be forced to file charges..that usually shuts em right up..

You’re not allowed to just pay what you feel like if it’s not what the hospital has agreed to. If that was the case everybody would just pay $5 a month regardless of what they owed and no business would be able to stay open. Every bank would fail. Sorry, that’s not how it works.

Hospitals have staff they have to pay, supplies they have to order, and it requires a steady income stream to happen. If they can’t count on a certain revenue, they can’t pay their vendors and their credit gets shut down. If you’re not contributing your part, they have every right to send you to collections.
