My mother in- law is very ill with cancer and is worried about her medical bills (over 3000.00 worth). I feel like she needs to focus more on getting better and less about her bills. What will happen if/when she passes away? Who will be responsible for her bills? Will they just go away? Will the put a lean against her home?

Her estate unless someone signs responsibility for them. So yes they could put a lien on the house as it is part of her estate.

Her estate, hopefully that’s her insurance. If there is none, then assets will have to be sold to pay for the cost. Executor of the will is responsible for payment.

The estate or the family.

the lean against the house will be the level “push into a shove”. The hospital will work out a payment plan and allow for the bills to paid on a timely manner. However if someone should breach payments, then drastic measures will probably be taken.

Life insurance.

Yes, her estate will have to pay if she passes
If she has nothing when she passes, then the bills go away

First they will check to see if there is any insurance (including but not limited to Medicaid).
Then the Executor of the Will is responsible for payment of the bills - from the ESTATE’S assets - NOT his (the Executor’s) own personal assets.
People are often confusing this.
“Will they just go away?” To tell you the truth, that depends on the medical provider. Sometimes, if they are alerted that the patient died, they will just “forget” the bill. BUT they do have to be called and asked. But, technically, a medical provider can put a lien against the house to get payment. It depends on the medical provider - some have more “teeth” than others.
Tell your mother-in-law to focus on getting better.< That’s the important thing. (And tell her to get some life insurance to help pay for estate expenses.)
