Storage of Umbilical Stem Cells
Stem cells are being studied for a wide range of treatments. Many are used to treat inherited disorders or acquired diseases. While embryonic stem cells are younger and have a greater ability as far as what they can become, Umbilical Stem Cells play an important roll in assisting many people with leukemia’s, refractory anemia’s, Hodgkin’s disease and many others. These cells are collected at the birth of a newborn. Prior arrangements are made between the parents to be and a lab that will store these cells until they are needed. Following the birth of the baby, the umbilical cord and placenta are shipped to the lab who then takes care of the stem cells that are found in this ‘extra’ blood and tissue.
